The breed

A gentle giant, with a few things worth knowing

Temperament

Great Danes are people-oriented, patient, and affectionate. The old nickname is the Apollo of dogs: large, and usually friendly rather than sharp. They can be sensitive, and they do best with calm handling and ordinary companionship. Levon is one of them — black with white markings, and carrying the natural floppy ears he was born with.

Size and years

Males often stand 30 to 34 inches or more at the shoulder. A big male may weigh well into the range Levon does, about 160 pounds. Lifespan is often about 7 to 10 years, shorter than many smaller breeds, which is part of why their years are kept close.

Health

Bloat, or gastric dilatation-volvulus, is an emergency in deep-chested breeds. A suddenly distended abdomen, unproductive retching, restlessness, or pacing is a reason to go to an emergency veterinarian, not to wait. Other issues people watch for include hip dysplasia, dilated cardiomyopathy, wobbler syndrome, and bone cancer. This is general breed awareness, not a note about Levon’s own medical file.
